7th seminar by EDRI & AACCSA
The Ethiopian Development Research Institute in collaboration with the Addis Ababa Chamber of Commerce and Sectoral Associations held the 6th seminar on “Issues and Problems of Exporters in Ethiopia: Effectiveness of Incentive Schemes, Taxation, and Customs Procedures” on Friday October 16, 2015 at the Elilly International Hotel.
The seminar was aimed at understanding the benefits of the shift from export to domestic market and discussing how existing incentive schemes are faring in promoting exports. It was also aimed at deliberating on issues and problems faced by exporters in relation to customs and custom procedures and addressing policy issues in the areas of tax and tariffs, customs, and investment incentives and recommending options to further strengthen the export sector.
The event was opened by statements from H.E. Newai Gebre-ab, Executive Director of EDRI and Ato Elias Geneti, President of AACCSA.
Ato Elias Geneti, President of AACCSA followed by presentation on “Tax and Tax Administration and Customs Procedures in Promoting Exports” by Ato Gaim Yibrah, Customs Procedures Directorate Director, Ethiopian Revenues and Customs Authority. Dr. Mulu Gebreyesus, Research Fellow at EDRI made a presentation on “Taxation Policy, Rate of Tariff, and Export Incentives Schemes in Promoting Exports and The Way Forward”. A third presentation was made on “Problems Faced by Exporters Related to Taxation, Customs and Export Incentives Schemes and Empirical Evidences on Export Performance” by Ato Tewodros Zewdie, Executive Director, Ethiopian Horticulture Producer Exporters Association.
The seminar was concluded with comments on the presentations and interventions from participants.
The seminar is part of the quarterly seminar series organized by EDRI and AACCA to discuss about problems and challenges of the Ethiopian private sector. The seminar brings together professionals and key subject matter experts from government, donors, the research community, academia as well as business enterprises.
