The Ethiopian Development Research Institute and the Japan International Cooperation Agency held the 8th High Level Forum on 26 October 2015 at the Sheraton Addis Hotel.
This Forum is the eighth event in the series of Phase II of Policy Dialogues on Industrial Development between the Government of Ethiopia and Japan.
The forum was opened with remarks from H.E. Mr. Ahmed Abetew, Ministry of Industry, H.E. Mr. Kazuhiro Suzuki, Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of Japan to Ethiopia, and Mr. Akio Nakamoto, Deputy Director General for Planning and Coordination, Industrial Development and Public Policy Department, JICA.
Chapters on Quality, Productivity, Competitiveness as well as industrial development components of the GTP 2 have been briefed to participants. A consultant from the JICA Ethiopia Office also presented key findings of an ongoing empirical study on Productivity and Wage in Ethiopia, especially focusing on light manufacturing industries.
Mr. Uematsu Hiroshi, CEO, Phnom Penh Special Economic Zone shared experiences from Cambodia on Industrial Park Development. There was also a presentation on Industrial Policy Dialogue involving export promotion, champion product approach, handholding program, FDI promotion by Professors Kenichi and Izumi Ohno from the National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies.
Presentations were followed by Q & A sessions which gave participants the opportunity to reflect.
The forum came to a close with remarks from H. E. Newai Gebre-ab, Chief Economic Advisor to the Prime Minister and Executive Director of EDRI.
The International Growth Centre held its annual Africa Growth Forum in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia from 29 June – 1 July. In this annual conference, researchers, academics and policy makers were brought together and presentations on topics pertinent to IGC partner counties were made.
