Project Launch Workshop
The Ethiopian Development Research Institute in collaboration with University College London and other partners launched a research project titled “Interaction between Industrial Policies and Green Economy Strategies in Ethiopia” on 4 May, 2015 at the Capital Hotel & Spa, Addis Ababa.
The workshop was opened with an introduction and overview by Dr. Mulu Gebreyesus, a senior researcher at EDRI and one of the coordinators of the project. This was followed by opening remarks from H.E Ato Newai Gebre-ab, Executive Director of EDRI and Chief Economic Advisor to the Prime Minister; H.E. Ato Kare Chawicha, State Minister of the Ministry of Environment and Forest; and Ato Tadesse Haile, State Minister of the Ministry of Industry.
Presentations were made by the project coordinators on the project background, objectives and methods inspiring questions and comments from participants. Dr. Mulu presented “The gaps and priorities in mainstreaming CRGE in industrial policy in Ethiopia” followed by Project objectives, work streams and partners by Professor Yacob Mulugeta, University College London. Professor Kevin from Quantum Global, Switzerland gave a brief on “Building credible and sustainable innovation systems for green industrialization” followed by “Governance and policy integration issues and green economy strategies” by Dr. Chukwumerije Okereke of Reading University.
Participants of the workshop included, experts from government ministries, different United Nations organizations, universities, international development organizations and researchers in the area.
The project has been initiated in response to Ethiopia’s ambitious strategy for a Climate Resilient Green Economy (CRGE) and the need to provide practical policy that would help to streamline this strategy with Ethiopia’s industrial sector strategy in the coming 5-year development plan (GTP III).
